“Planting the Sand Cherry” by Ann Struthers
Today I planted the sand cherry with red leaves—
and hope that I can go on digging in this yard,
pruning the grape vine, twisting the silver lace
on its trellis, the one that bloomed
just before the frost flowered over all the garden.
Next spring I will plant more zinnias, marigolds,
straw flowers, pearly everlasting, and bleeding heart.
I plant that […]

Berry Planting In New Vrindaban
The fencing project has been on hold for the last 4 days. One day I spent at the temple giving moral support to Soma and Hari Bhakta while they were planting berries and now three days of rain.
Most of the deer wire is hung and stretched but it still needs lots of staples, it is […]

“I smoke ten cigars a day,” she said. “Before I go to bed, I smoke a […]

Drinking Milk From Cows That Will Be Slaughtered
How can society be organized for the peace and well-being of all? Srila Prabhupada discusses this question with Mr. C. Hennis of the U.N.’s International Labor Organization in Geneva, Switzerland, in May of 1974.
Srila Prabhupada: The social body should have a class of men who act as the brain and guide everyone so that everyone […]

The Soul of Merton 4-18-09
Inspired by my readings of “Contemplative Prayer” and “Contemplation In A World Of Action” by Thomas MertonI’m upfront about it…discipline. I’ve rarely had it in my life (outside of high school football, and it did do me wonders then), and in my sad…

Our Nuts Are Bigger!
This is not a macho statement but a quote from the website Soma sent me about the chestnuts I got from Hari Bhakta. I miscalled them, they are actually Dunstan Chestnuts and have an interesting story.
From Chestnut Hill Farms:
The Dunstan Chestnut
In the early 1950s, James Carpentar of Salem, Ohio, discovered a large living American […]

Nut Trees Planted and Caged
I have been making some progress on the food raising front. I got two Dunham chestnuts from Hari Bhakta which brought my total of nut trees planted to 17. There are all in the ground, mulched, and cages built around them for deer protection. Without the cages the whole endeavor would be an exercise in […]
