Discard All This Quibbling
You may have noticed two things in recent days. The election of Barack Obama, the first African-American to become the President of the United States, and nationwide protests to the passing of Proposition 8 in California of all places, which strictly …

“The Secret” by Denise Levertov
Two girls discover
the secret of life
in a sudden line of
poetry.
I who don’t know the
secret wrote
the line. They
told me
(through a third person)
they had found it
but not what it was
not even
what line it was. No doubt
by now, more than a week
later, they have forgotten
the secret,
the line, the name of
the poem. I love them
for finding what
I can’t find,
and […]

Hay In The Barn And In Art
Here is a picture of hay in New Vrindaban’s winter barn.
Here is a painting about hay from the 16th century.
If you want to see a whole website dedicated to pictures and paintings about hay making check out Hay In Art.
Haymaking might seem quaint and of little interest to those who live on packaged milk from […]

January Has Arrived
We are having a spell of cold and snowy weather. The temperatures are about 15 degrees (8.3 C) below normal which makes them average for late December, early January. There have been snow flakes for the last couple of days but because the ground is still warm they hadn’t stuck until this morning when we […]

Drill, Baba, Drill
We have completed installing the posts for the 8 foot (2.44 m) deer fence. There were many blocks thrown in our path, each one more frustrating than the next, but eventually we finished.
The first was that the post hole digger I bought more than 30 years ago when I was in charge of the farming […]

The Truth Is Out There?
Hello, my name is Chris, and I’m a recovering conspiracy theorist. With your help, maybe, just maybe, I can return to a world free of cynicism, paranoia, and outlandish, highly speculative fairy tales. I’m serious!I guess I’m not exactly rolling with t…

Columbus show
Last weekend Padmavati had one of her paintings in a very prestigious art show in Columbus, hosted by the Ohio Watercolor Society. Each year they give an award to one high school student and one college student. She received a check along with a gift certificate for art supplies. It was exciting and inspiring to see the varied selection of art work and to hear the judge’s comments about each piece.

Pear harvest
Today I harvested the last of Gran’s pears. They are the most delicious pears that we have ever had. Soft, ripe and juicy. The question is whether we can eat them fast enough before they spoil, or should I make jam. Pear and ginger jam is really good. Last week I made quince jam with some quinces that Madhava Ghosh gave to us. It turned out quite good, however I have run out of jars and it is hard to buy more canning jars at this time of year. Next year we will have to plan ahead and buy extra jars for the whole season.

Should We Renounce The World?
“Christians are now asking themselves curious questions about something called the “world.” Should they revile it as their fathers did? Should they renounce it as monks do? Should they love it as it loves itself? Should they enter into dialogue with it, as the Pope has dialogues with all kinds of people […]
