Pedantry Versus Intellectualism
I was pondering the difference between pedants and intellectuals and this line came to mind:
“All she’s learned she’s had to memorize”
Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine
by Country Joe McDonald
She hides in an attic concealed on a shelf
Behind volumes of literature based on herself
And runs across the pages like some tiny elf
Knowing that it’s hard to find
Stuff […]

It Falleth Like The Gentle Rain From Heaven
“Just like two birds. So he is acting as my friend. That is described in the Upanisad, that two birds are sitting in one tree in friendly terms. One bird is eating the fruit of the tree, and the other bird is simply witnessing. So the bird which is eating the fruit of the tree, […]

Bluets
This is a clump of bluets (Houstonia caerulea) growing in the McCreary Cemetery. This is a privately-owned cemetery that contains the graves of the famous bordermen Lewis Wetzel and his brother Martin, their mother, and other relatives and descendants. It is bordered on the east by New Vrindaban land.
The land separating […]

The Real Solution to Global Warming?
To the hope of many and the chagrin of the few, the pressing demands of our looming earthly environmental crisis are finally seeping like an inevitable flood into the mainstream of cultural thought across the world. However, as my favorite quotemaster-prabhu Madhava Gosh says, while the rest of the world agrees that global warming […]

Opening Act
Reporting from New Vrindaban, its absolutely warm and peaceful. Everybody you know and see brings a smile and a joke. If you get in the right frame of mind, you can actually realize there is nothing to fear, and the taste of the Lord becomes vivid and real.On Friday night, Caitanya and I made our […]

mEDitating
Every morning at 9:26 AM I mediate on my friend Ed. Then again at 9:36.
He is a chiropractor in Minneapolis. He ran a promotion that if you donated your old cell phone, your name would go into a drawing and at the end of the month a name would be drawn. The winner would get […]

Ramps
Before the Easter snow my granddaughter and I went for a nature hike. We dug up a wild leek, known in Appalachia as ramp. I’m not sure about the classification of this specimen. According to an article in the Christian Science Monitor, “the ramp is named after the early British word “ramson,” or […]

Lokavarnatamma Prabhu and the Power of Persuasion
By Srila Jiva Goswami dasa
Different Devotees manifest different miraculous potencies. Devotees who exhibit yoga seem to me either not aware You are flying, floating, appearing in more than one place simultaneously, or You take it as normal behavior.
An example of this latter circumstance is the gift of superb Powers of Persuasion, regularly manifested […]

More on the Turkey
About a week ago I saw the tom turkey (Meleagris gallapavo) again. It was in the early evening before dusk. He was down in the woods alternately pecking on the ground and walking around displaying his full tail feathers. I did not have my binoculars, so I could not get the details of his […]

Phenological News Roundup
Violets, heal-all, dandelions, and gill-over-the-ground have been in blossom for some days.
The many trees that budded out before the early April snowstorm show the effects of that freezing weather. The pink magnolia in our yard was in full bloom. The ruined flowers are still on the branches.
The cold snap had silenced the peepers but […]

The Birth of the Spoon Revolution
I’ve always had a slight obsession with soup spoons. Now I understand why. Check out this flick: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4sK1PZHWPg
